ALVIS TD 21 - Lot 62
ALVIS TD 21 Released in 1958, the TD 21 was the successor to the aptly named TC21. Equipped with the company's 3-bed, 6-cylinder engine, this 4-seater coupe - from which a convertible was also derived - was built by Park Ward. Equipped with a 4-speed manual gearbox, with or without overdrive, or an automatic gearbox, it was fitted with brake discs at the front from 1959, then on all 4 wheels in 1962, as well as a 5-speed manual gearbox that same year, becoming a Series 2. Swiss coachbuilder Graber offers its own version on the same chassis. Production of the TD 21 ended in 1963, with just over a thousand examples produced, the vast majority with right-hand drive. The Alvis brand, created in 1919, produced automobiles until 1967, but continued to manufacture military vehicles and aircraft engines for a long time to come. This Alvis model TD21 was bodied by Park Ward in 1961 (like Rolls Royce and Bentley) and delivered in 1962 to Mr Berry in Eastbourne. Shortly afterwards, it was bought by Rowland Simmons, who was Service Director at Alvis. He had some modifications made at the factory: Series II front end, keeping the Series I rear end, fitting a ZF 5-speed gearbox found only on Astons and Maseratis of the time, Girling disc brakes from Jaguar and TF rear suspension. In the 1980s, it was also owned by John Fox, director of the Alvis archives. This car is well known to the Alvis club. It's right-hand drive, in its original silver livery, red leather interior (driver's seat redone). The entire underside of the car was stripped bare, cleaned and the rusty parts replaced, as a book with photos of the work attests. The cylinder head was rebuilt, as were the carburetors and fuel pump. It runs like clockwork, with the wonderful raspy sound of the 6-cylinder. The interior is original, with its patina preserving the car's soul.
