JAGUAR XK 120 - Lot 51
JAGUAR XK 120 In order to conquer the largest post-war market, the USA, Jaguar CEO William Lyons decided to launch a new, larger, more luxurious and more powerful sedan (the future MK VII). To achieve this, he built a new engine, the famous XK, with two overhead camshafts. It's a 3.44-liter in-line 6-cylinder. Unfortunately, designing and building the new body took much longer than expected. To keep customers waiting, he modernized the old models for the 1948 London Motor Show. He also decided to present the new engine, which was ready. To do this, he hastily designed a 2-seater roadster, without thinking of marketing it afterwards. The prototype was so successful at the show that it was decided to produce a small series. Developing 160 HP, which was enormous for the time, it was sold at an unbeatable price. The one designated XK 120 (for 120 miles per hour, or 193 km/h) sold very well, and over 12,000 examples were produced until 1954. It was soon entered in a variety of competitions, both on the road and on the track, and its sporty derivatives, such as the more powerful "type C" and "type D", won the 24 Hours of Le Mans several times. In 1951, a coupé was added to the roadster, and in 1953, a more luxurious cabriolet with roll-down windows and a less rudimentary soft top completed the range. The model presented here benefited from a complete restoration some 10 years ago. It dates from 1954, and has been appraised as a veteran. The bodywork of this model, with its flowing, sensual lines, is adorned with a refined tint that highlights the iconic curves of this legendary roadster. The tastefully patinated leather interior offers unique charm and period comfort, while the subtly restored woodwork recalls the luxury of the 50s. Mechanically irreproachable, this XK120 combines original performance and reliability, thanks to regular and meticulous maintenance since its restoration. It starts right up, with the muffled rumble so characteristic of the in-line six-cylinder. A symbol of a bygone era when the automobile was synonymous with passion and style, this Jaguar represents a rare opportunity to acquire a vehicle that is both prestigious and road-ready.
