PEUGEOT 402 B 1939 Swiss registration Chassis... - Lot 13 - Arteal
PEUGEOT 402 B 1939 Swiss registration Chassis number 808 550 Displacement 2142 cm3 Power 44 kW First registration 27.10.1939 Last expertise 08.01.2021 Mileage 6400 km (meter reading) The 402 appeared in 1935. In contrast to the ultra-classicism of its predecessor, the 401, its so-called "Sochaux spindle" shape surprises the public with its modernity. Indeed, the wings are integrated into the bodywork and the rear wheels are covered, the headlights are integrated into the grille and very close. It is a wind of aerodynamism that comes from the USA, initiated by Chrysler. It is available in many versions, sedan and 4-door limousine, in two chassis lengths, in coupe and convertible versions (the famous Eclipse with the sheet metal roof disappearing inside the body), as well as several commercial versions (vans, etc...). Mechanically, it is more classically equipped with a 4-cylinder engine of 2 liters, then 2.1 liters (402 B), a mechanical 3-speed gearbox and cable brakes. An electromagnetic "Cotal" gearbox is available as an option. Some versions will even try to compete on the circuit, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, thanks to the roadster prepared by Emile Darlmat, with good results. It should be noted that it will have little sisters with the same body lines in a reduced size: the 302, as well as the 202 equipped with a 4-cylinder 1.1-liter engine. The 202 was the only Peugeot of the 02 series to be produced after the war until 1949. The car presented has a history out of the ordinary. Coming out of the Peugeot factories on October 27, 1939, chassis 808 550 is a Type N5, which was delivered to the Air Ministry in France in limousine bodywork. The car is equipped with the rare and very expensive "Cotal Electro-Mechanical Gearbox" option. According to the technical documents delivered with the vehicle concerning its operation: "One thus obtains a range of 4 speeds judiciously staggered, of which the fourth is the direct catch". In fact, it provides a pleasure and a driving comfort unseen on a car of the inter-war period. Bought just after the war by an antique and painting dealer in the center of France, the car was rebuilt at his request by the Lourtioux company at 10, rue des Grands Près in Montluçon. It is thus similar to the so-called "Canadienne" model, without being one. In fact, it mixes a wood and sheet metal structure, with a practical tailgate separated in two allowing an easy loading. The car was then immobilized for some time by a neighbor of the owners who finally bought it. He used it with pleasure and participated with it in vintage car events. In 2001, it was acquired by new owners, who used it between their various properties in central France and Saint-Tropez to go to the market and golf in a historic and original car. It was at this time that it was given important care by specialists (full documentation available) and that "L'Aventure Peugeot" in Sochaux was contacted to retrace some of its history (documents attached to the file). In 2016, its owner moves to Ticino. In 2020, the car is put up for sale and acquired by its current owner, who has jealously watched over it to keep it perfectly maintained and in its superb condition. This is a unique opportunity to drive in a vehicle that is no less unique and that immediately attracts sympathy.
